Welcome to the Healthy Baby Boomers Network

In January 2011, the first round of baby boomers (born between 1946 ad 1964) will turn 65.  If you are a baby boomer, you were probably either a love child, an activist, a rebel, a hard working professional, an imaginative entrepreneur, a skilled worker or someone who never quite fit into society.  This group experimented with drugs, attended the live Woodstock event or regretted not going, marched on Washington (some got beaten with clubs), participated in campus riots, lived through the war in Vietnam, fought in the war or found a way out of it, or chose to live in a commune and raise children in a group setting.

 

The baby boomers were right there during the civil rights movement, the womens’ liberation movement, the gay pride movement and so much more.  We watched our favorite TV shows on only a few channels (2, 4, 7, 9, 11 and 13, if I remember correctly) and the entire country had the exact same TV stations.  Our favorite shows were I Love Lucy, Father Knows Best,  The Honeymooners, Amos and Andy, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and several others.  We watched our music heroes, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and so many others on the weekly Ed Sullican Show. And we all watched the same shows – at the same time.

 

We witnessed the first man walking on the moon, the death of our beloved President Kennedy –and if I asked you, you could probably tell me exactly where you were at the moment you heard the news that he had been shot.  That moment felt like the death of innocence for the entire nation but expecially for the baby boomers who were just coming of age.

This vibrant group of peaceniks is gradually aging and although we never thought it would happen to us, we have some very real life issues to face.  Keeping a healthy lilfestyle is important at any age, but for baby boomers NOW is the time.  What we do now, how we treat our bodies and what we devote our energy and attention to, will become our legacy for all who follow.

 

In 2009 it was determined that there were 96,548 centenarians living in the United States. that number is expected to increase to 580.000 by the year 2040.  Will YOU be one of them?  What would you have to do, right now, to increase your potential longevity?  Do you know?  Do you care?

 

My mission is to help baby boomers to remain vibrant, healthy, happy and contributing to society for many, many, many years to come.  I will be sharing what I have learned during my years as a professor of health and physical education, my years of injuries, aches and pains and life saving body therapies.  I will share my experience with, and knowledge of, traditional counseling, sex therapy, mind-body therapy, and alternative healing methods,.  I will recount much of what I have learned from decades of reading research articles and health books, attending and presenting at conferences and seminars, and working with clients who presented with a wide variety of issues and concerns.  I will also share success stories of baby boomers who are making a difference in the health, well being, comfort and enjoyment of life for all of us.

 

Please join me in this exciting adventure as we slowly, year by year, enter the wisdom years of our lives.  I look forward to sharing what I know with you, learning from your knowledge and experiences, reading your comments and talking with you in telesemianrs and webinars and live events in the months and years to come.

Hi Erica,

I love this concept and your site as well! Being a baby boomer myself I could identify a lot with your reminiscing – yes, no TIVO!

I also agree with you that we all want to remain vibrant and healthy in order to have a good quality of life in these years. I call it investing in our future healthy selves. What we do today matters for our tomorrows. Thanks for sharing.

Hi DrErica –

I fall a little shy of the official baby boomer dates, but only by a little – grin. Can totally see the concerns and life challenges that go with a gracefully (yet certainly) aging body starting to come around. What’s crazy is that ‘my generation’ also has the additional challenge of many late life babies – so here I am at 43 with soon to be 4, 8 and 16yo kids. Think taking care of me gets put off?

I bet this site fills a real gap for many people – good luck with it!

Thanks for stopping by and for offering support. Especially when we have so much responsibility, as you currently do, it is essential to take care of yourself (whenever you can). Even 5 minutes/day of a time out where you sit quietly and imagine a beautiful, peaceful, luxurious place with no responsibilities – can do wonders for you.
